New Patent Watch

With the upcoming protests against new EU Patent Reforms I decided to visit the US patent office website and do a search for the word "click" and came up with 16841 results. I was interested to see this patent, # 6,609,105 described as a "System and method for providing access to electronic works" dated August 19, 2003 by Sander (Alexander) van Zoest of mp3.com fame.

I then did a google search on him and was quite surprised to find he is an open source supporter, perl, apache and freebsd programmer.

Looks as though the Patent battle is becoming murkier indeed.

Patents misunderstood again
Authored by: pcm on Monday, August 25 2003 @ 11:41 AM CDT
Boy, what a mess. The entire US patent system (and everywhere I else, I think) was originally set up to provide for SHARING new technologies. It was supposed to be that in return for showing the rest of the world how to do your new trick, process, machine, whatever, you got 17 years of exclusivity -- a head start. Not intended whatsover to give anyone rights to any idea, which clearly might be invented again somewhere else. This really curdles my milk!
